Poems Written to Sean

I wrote these poems during a relationship that began just before the reconstruction portion of my mastectomy. I sent each poem to Sean, and he wrote me back in poetry, as well. To protect his privacy, I have included only my poetry, not his. These poems document the beginning, middle, and end of our romance.

I am including these poems because they show that intimacy can be achieved in just about any circumstance, if we can tolerate the vulnerability to allow it.

My relationship with Sean ended because he was a “rescuer.” As I got stronger and no longer needed to be rescued, our bond could no longer sustain itself. That being said, Sean was a great gift. He taught me the power of love during a challenging time and showed me that love can be the most potent treatment of all.
